A Nasty Virus

My computer has picked up one of those horrible browser hijackers. I can't accomplish anything in IE, the browser that works best with my ISP, but am able to do a few things here in Netscape. I have someone coming out tomorrow to see what they can do. From what I've heard so far, they often have to erase your entire hard drive, I'm not happy.

But it is Cotillion day and there are a few ladies you should visit. So far I only know that Carol is hosting. I haven't been reading all of my Cotillion mail lately. My bad. I'll come back later and update this, or you could just pop on over to the Cotillion hub site and check for yourself. Anyway, I'm hoping to post later on today. Thanks.

Have you tried Firefox at all? Are you running windows 2000, XP or what?

I have Direcway Satellite Broadband and Firefox does not like to cooperate with Direcway. IE has always functioned the best for me with Direcway. Fortunately a few weeks ago I added Netscape just out of curiosity. It's a good thing I did because if not I'd be running to my local public library for Internet access.

Hey, check this post out:

The first or second response gives a hack for Firefox.

Yea, I've been to several of these forums. I have spent countless hours on the phone with the techs from Direcway. The problems I've had with Direcway are infinite. The installer has come to the conclusion that I my modem is defective. I'm in the process of demanding the upgraded model right now. Most of the individuals I've communicated with about this Firefox/Direcway problem have put a few extensions on and been better off, but speed wise? IE blows Firefox away with Direcway. I've actually been getting better numbers today with Netscape better than ever. But the problem with my IE browser being hijacked still remains. Tomorrow, tomorrow. I just pray we don't have to delete the hard drive.

Stacy get rid of that thing asap. Go ahead and prepare for a reformat. We all ought to prepare for one periodically anyway. Hijackers can be nasty little data miners.

I think it sucks that you can't run firefox. The tab management alone makes it better for bloggers.

Stacy, have you run Spybot and Adaware? Also try HijackThis. I've had problems that required the application of all three.

There are many good tools out there now, and it is rarely necessary to reformat. Of course, if you don't mind reformatting, that can be a quick fix, but getting the system back to usable for any real work is not quick.

What is your strategy for backing up? With the large drives we all use, it's become a serious problem. One alternative worth considering is to install a second hard drive of equal size and manually mirror to it using a tool like Ghost. Do not use automatic mirroring, as it will simply migrate the problem to the copy. If you then run a mirror as often as you feel necessary (what is the largest acceptable loss of work?), you can recover simply by switching to the mirrored drive, and at your convenience, mirroring that back to the other drive.

For your web content files, work in progress, etc., zip files copied to floppies, or to a zip disk or CD/DVD will be great insurance.

What is your strategy for backing up?
I have a drive called "Data" that I have shared across my network at home, and has subdirectories that are accessible by my family members. They have been taught they are to put changable items that can't be reproduced easily (like mp3's that can be re-ripped from a CD) there.

I then have an automatic job that backs up only that directory every two nights onto a rewritable CD. I keep about a dozen CDs (almost a month of backups).

This way, I can clear any of my boxes at any time without having to worry about losses of data.

Those items will be on the agenda tomorrow when I have a computer tech sitting here with me.

YOU BOYS ARE FRICKIN' AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I downloaded a different spyware/hijack this and it worked. I'm still having the guy come out tomorrow because there are some things I've been wanting to deal with.

WOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stacy, don't let anyone tell you that you "have to" have your harddrive reformated after a natsy virus infection. In 15 years of repairing computers I have NEVER had to do anything that drastic. Heck I just completed cleaning two computers: one running Win XP containing 86 different spies/trojans, and one running Win 98 that had over 400 porn hacks into their IE and registry.

If you don't already have a virus scanner or an ad/trojan/spy program then email me for a "special deal".

Also note that your backup CD's could be infested too.
